All about snowmobiling in Vemdalen

Last updated

There is a great sense of freedom in taking your snowmobile out into the mountains and forests, but with that freedom comes responsibility. Here you can read about the rules that apply when riding a snowmobile in Vemdalen.

Drive in the right place

Snowmobile driving is not included in the right of public access. It is therefore important to stick to marked snowmobile trails and avoid driving on forest and agricultural land, ski trails, or in densely populated areas.

Off-road driving law:

"Anyone who travels without permission across someone else's land that may be damaged may be convicted of trespassing and sentenced to a fine or imprisonment for a maximum of six months."

(Penal Code, Chapter 12, Section 4)

It is prohibited to:

  • Driving in young forest under two meters above the snow cover
  • Drive on forest roads unless they are marked as snowmobile trails.
  • Skiing on groomed trails and at ski resorts
  • Follow snowmobile tracks outside trails
  • Driving on roads (except for short transport distances)
  • Disturbing wild animals or reindeer

Snowmobile trails and trail permits

Stay on marked snowmobile trails – it's the safest way to ride. The snowmobile trails are prepared by non-profit snowmobile clubs, and you need a trail pass to use them. You can easily purchase one via the Cardskipper app. The proceeds go toward grooming, maintenance, and investments in new machines.

You can purchase day, week, or season passes. Membership in the snowmobile club provides discounts and invitations to group snowmobile activities.

Driver's license – what applies?

A special driving license is required to drive a snowmobile. You may also drive if you have a driver's license or tractor license issued before January 1, 2000.

To obtain a driver's license, you must:

  1. That you are at least 16 years old
  2. Completed training with an approved trainer
  3. Passed a knowledge test

Foreign drivers need a snowmobile license or must participate in a guided tour. For guided tours, a driver's license (at least AM qualification) is required, and the driver must be at least 16 years old.

Book a course for a driver's license at Vemdalens Snowmobile Club.

Show consideration in the mountain environment

  • Give way to skiers, dog sleds, and pedestrians
  • Avoid driving on groomed ski trails
  • Do not drive in residential areas or on roads
  • Show respect for nature and other mountain visitors
  • Use rest houses with consideration – bring firewood and take your trash home with you.
  • No snowmobile riding at night (9 p.m.–7 a.m.) near cottages

Reindeer grazing land and wildlife

Reindeer graze in this area during the winter. If you see reindeer, stop your snowmobile and let the animals pass in peace.

Starting and unloading points

There are several starting points in the area, including:

Vemdalen Experience – here you can also buy trail maps and park your snowmobile in a garage overnight.

• Lövåsgården in Vemdalen village

Hedlanda Airport

• Storhogna area, opposite the M building at the recycling center
