For Gunnar, the fish are often just a bonus. What matters is getting out into nature, spending time together, and letting the kids explore at their own pace. Sitting by the water, casting a few times, unpacking a picnic, and just being—that’s where memories are made.

For beginners who want to try fishing with their kids, Gunnar recommends Varggranstjärn—a lake that’s easy to reach by car. It’s both beautiful and often mosquito-free thanks to its location high up in the mountains. There are also wind shelters where you can sit down and enjoy a snack you’ve brought along between casts. But perhaps the most important advice for beginners isn’t the choice of fishing spot, but to be patient.

– Many people give up too soon. You have to give fishing a fair chance. Bring a snack and treat the outing as an opportunity to enjoy nature, not just as a way to catch fish.

A lifelong interest in fishing

Gunnar’s interest in fishing was sparked at an early age, thanks to his grandfather from Klövsjö. With a simple fishing rod and a jar of worms, a lifelong passion began—one that he later passed on to his own children. One memory that stands out particularly strongly for him is from a summer evening when Gunnar was sitting at the kitchen table at home and his then-ten-year-old daughter called, panicked. She had hooked a large rainbow trout and didn’t know how to land it. Gunnar jumped in the car to help, but by the time he arrived, his daughter had already managed to land the fish all on her own.

– That’s what real fishing joy is all about. You never know what’s in store, and that’s exactly what makes fishing so special.
