Set in present-day Tokyo, the film follows an American actor (Brendan Fraser) who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual job: working for a Japanese "rental family" agency, where he plays stand-ins for strangers. As he delves into his clients' worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between acting and reality. He is confronted with the moral complications of his job and, at the same time, discovers meaning, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human relationships.
