Fishing in the mountains of Vemdalen – an easily accessible lake at 900 meters above sea level

Last updated

When Vemdalen’s own fishing guru, Gunnar Ekberg, is asked about the best and most accessible waters for family fishing, it comes as no surprise that Varggranstjärnen makes it into Gunnar’s top 5. And he’s not the only one who thinks so. Varggranstjärnen is something of a fishing paradise for us enthusiastic amateurs eager for nature experiences, excitement, and joy in the summer mountains.

The conditions for magical fishing aren’t just good in Vemdalen—they’re truly special. Take Varggranstjärnen, for example. At a breathtaking 902 meters above sea level, we find this beautifully nestled mountain lake, which is likely one of the country’s most picturesque spots for catch-and-release rainbow trout fishing. The view from here is also unparalleled; more than a few “once-in-a-lifetime” smartphone photos have surely been captured here, where mirror-smooth water meets the mountains at sunset. In other words, should you ever grow tired of fishing—which is highly unlikely—the view and tranquility are always right here. The biggest advantage for us comfortable anglers or the large family with kids in tow is that the water is conveniently accessible by car all the way to the shore.

Fishing should be easy

Here in Vemdalen, fishing is part of our culture and a heritage we are happy to share through the bountiful catches that await in our region. That is also why we have made fishing in Vemdalen convenient and easily accessible. Just like at Varggranstjärnen, many of our best fishing spots are just a short walk from the road. Trails have been cleared and shores have been cleaned up. Docks, wind shelters, and fire pits have been built. Boats are available for rent, and professional guides are happy to show you the way to their most secret favorite spots when you want to make the most of your fishing experience.

“So what kind of bait should we use at Varggranstjärnen?” we ask Gunnar Ekberg. “Reel fishing with a spinner, fly fishing, or worm fishing are the three best methods for getting a bite,” he explains.

Bonus tip!

Järpbäcksdammen

Easily accessible water below the slope of Högfjället. Trout and char have been stocked here, and in the evening hours you can see hundreds of them rising to the surface. Parking, a wind shelter, and a fire pit are nearby.

Storvåndtjärn

Fine trout, char, pike, perch, and whitefish in Vemhån. The lake is relatively large, and there’s plenty of room for anyone who wants to try their hand at catching trout and char in the 2–3-kilogram range. Try fly fishing, trolling, spin fishing, or bait fishing. Accessible by car all the way to the shore. The area is well-maintained, with windbreaks, a barbecue area, and restrooms.

Black Star

Right next to Hotel Klövsjöfjäll lies the sparkling Svartåstjärn. It’s a paradise for fly fishermen and spin fishermen, with a stocked population of char, brown trout, and rainbow trout that will bite on just about anything. You can rent both canoes and boats.
