Hiking trails, React-EU Vemdalen

The project started on May 1, 2021, and ended on October 31, 2023. The primary purpose of the project has been to work on physical investments along our hiking and walking trails.

The main objectives have been to:

  1. Ensuring the most popular trails are ready for increased visitor pressure and protecting the land and nature ahead of the summer. This has also included initiating and proposing good waste management, as well as increasing accessibility to the trails and the diversity of visitors.
  2. Find sustainable solutions for future care and maintenance of the trails, including financing for this.
  3. Ensure high-quality mountain experiences all year round. This is partly to contribute to a more even basis for employment and business activity in the local economy throughout all seasons.

A selection of what we have done

The project has primarily focused on physical investments in hiking and walking trails. Our aim has been to create a trail system that is sustainable, safe, and secure, and can offer high-quality experiences all year round. This has been achieved mainly by replacing old and partially rotten footbridges, bridges, and other structures with new timber, as well as reviewing and improving the winter hiking trails. In total, we have purchased approximately 13,000 running meters of footbridge timber and some other construction timber between 2021 and 2023. This has mainly been used for new footbridges and bridges, but also for handrails and guardrails, among other structures, to facilitate accessibility. As part of the project, we have also built a new rest hut next to a popular excursion destination (the hunting lodge above Vemdalsskalet), a new wind shelter, barbecue areas, a number of benches for temporary breaks along the trails, an outdoor toilet, and a few ladders, stairs, and reinforcements at difficult passages, mainly next to some very popular excursion destinations.
