Winners in the long run

The future of cross-country skiing in Destination Vemdalen – together we are creating a long-term solution.

The cross-country trails are an important reason for visiting Vemdalen and a crucial factor in ensuring that the area remains an attractive destination. When SkiStar decided to end its involvement in the operation and maintenance of the cross-country trails (except for Björnrike , where SkiStar will continue to operate), there was a need for a new, long-term solution. Destination Vemdalen AB has therefore applied for and been granted project funding from Leader Grogrund to run the Vinnare i Längden (Winners in the Long Run) project.

Goal

The project will run from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026.

The aim is to create conditions for an independent rail company that can, in a professional and sustainable manner:

• Ensure a long-term product that strengthens Vemdalen as a destination
• Responsible for the operation, management, and development of cross-country trails

Current situation

Intensive work is currently underway to reach agreements on the cross-country trails and sign new agreements with the landowners concerned. Historically, the cross-country trails have largely been free of charge, but in the future they will become a paid product. The revenue will be used to compensate landowners who make their land available and to finance operation and maintenance. At the same time, Destination Vemdalen AB is working to find external actors who can contribute financing—a solution that means the costs will not be borne by the shareholders or Destination Vemdalen AB's finances.

Winter operation 25/26

The project does not include the operation of the tracks, but rather aims to create the conditions for this to happen under someone else's management. Pending the formation of a new track company, Destination Vemdalen AB has taken on the role and responsibility of operating the cross-country tracks during the coming season (2025/26). It is currently uncertain which tracks will be available for use during the winter. This depends on where agreements and contracts can be made.

Together for the future

The goal is clear – to establish a long-term sustainable and professionally managed cross-country skiing product that benefits guests and visitors, businesses, landowners, and everyone who lives and works in the Vemdalen destination.
