Vemdalen continues to develop rapidly with new lifts, slopes, restaurants, and accommodations shaping today's mountain destination. Most things change, but one thing remains the same. The snowmobiles that have been chugging across the mountains since 1966 have become an integral part of the skiing experience and the genuine mountain feeling.
Snow Trac, the manufacturer of our snowmobiles, is essentially a snow-going tracked vehicle. They were manufactured in Sweden for a couple of decades, starting in the late 1950s, before production finally ceased. They have been rolling along the mountains ever since, and in Vemdalen, the route between Vemdalsskalet-Jaktstugan and Storhogna-Samevistet is used frequently throughout the winter, starting just before Christmas, weather permitting.
The fact that these fantastic machines can even be kept alive today is largely thanks to a rather daring vessel enthusiast from Klövsjö.
Christer Morlind is the man who can still be seen gliding across the mountains between Storhogna and Samevistet in one of his well-maintained Snow-Tracs. He was the one who bought up the spare parts warehouse in Östersund when production was discontinued and the warehouse was sold off. In addition to spare parts, there was a large collection of original drawings. Since then, Christer has managed and distributed parts to virtually every country where there is snow and a genuine snowmobile available. Today, you can meet Christer out on the mountains as he drives his snowmobile between Storhogna and Samevistet. Samevistet is a delightful waffle restaurant, a solitary little spot in the middle of a fantastic mountain landscape about 3 km from Storhogna Högfjällshotell. The place also has a lovely outdoor seating area where families have been sitting and enjoying the spring sunshine for generations. A visit to Samevistet is something to add to your bucket list!
The weasels have been gone from Vemdalsskalet since 1966.
The Jaktstugan restaurant opened as early as 1966. This now well-known waffle restaurant is located on northern Skalsfjället, about 3 km from Vemdalsskalet. In the 1960s, the then Svenska Fjäll operated boat traffic to Oxsjön, among other places. It was also thanks to this that Adolf Hallgren and Evert Jonsson began to think about opening a waffle restaurant in the middle of the mountains! Since the existing road for boat traffic to Oxsjön already crossed their own land, the choice of location was obvious. Jaktstugan quickly went from idea to reality, and on February 12, 1966, the first waffles were baked. The boats were purchased, and Adolf transported tourists both in and behind the boat up to the restaurant. This is still done today, but now it is Adolf's son, Sven-Arne Hallgren, who can be seen gliding across the mountain in the red sled.
