The Howling Dog Farm

The Howling Dog Farm is run by Jenny and Johnny, who have been working with dogs since the early 1990s. Johnny has been driving tourists since 1995 and has competed successfully in several long-distance races. The business was previously based in Smedsta, north of Östersund, but after several winters with little snow, it has moved to an area closer to the mountains. Since Johnny comes from Vemdalen, the location was a natural choice.

All tours are led by a guide per sled. During the trip, the guide will tell you about the dogs, dog sledding, and the surrounding nature. Along the trail, you will look for animal tracks in the snow, and sometimes you may spot owls, black grouse, capercaillie, or golden eagles. Binoculars are available for those who want to look for animals, and with a little luck, you may even see reindeer or moose during the tour.

The area is characterized by a history of many mountain pastures that once belonged to the village farms. Some of them still remain. The Köpmankölens nature reserve is also located in the area. The tour takes you through low mountain terrain and across vast wetlands. Along the way, you will see trees covered in beard lichen and old, gnarled pines that have withstood the weather and wind for generations.

The Howling Dog Farm

The Howling Dog Farm consists of around 20 Alaskan Husky sled dogs. This is a happy, friendly, and hard-working breed that thrives when working. Each dog has its own personality and unique way of being.
